Timeline

  • May 9, 2024 — the "People's University for Palestine YEG" set up a solidarity encampment on the U of A main quad. Peak ~120 people / 40 tents (EPS estimate); >100 gathered at launch. Demands: disclose and divest university investments from Israeli institutions, amnesty for protesters, and that the university condemn "the current genocide of Palestinians."
  • May 10 — U of A Protective Services posted trespass/disbandment notices; wood pallets delivered (later removed at UAPS request ~8 hrs before the sweep, per prof. David Kahane).
  • May 11, ~4:45–5:25 a.m. — at the university's request (President Bill Flanagan's decision), Edmonton Police Service cleared the camp. Final eviction notice read ~4:55 a.m.; ~half the camp left; police performed a "measured advance." Cleared by 5:25 a.m., camp gone by ~7:30 a.m.

Force used

Officers used batons, non-lethal ammunition filled with pepper spray (paintball-style), and a muzzle blast containing pepper spray toward the ground. EPS (Insp. Lance Parker) denied tear gas; demonstrators and The Gateway reported "gas" forming during the clash. Some officers wore chest guards without name tags (only regimental numbers, or neither) — which drove a police-commission query and a policy change (McFee: ID tags to show regimental number only).

Arrests, charges, injuries

  • 3 men arrested — a 23-year-old Edmontonian, a 30-year-old (address unknown), and a 30-year-old Australian; none were registered U of A students. Charged with assault of a peace officer / assault / obstruction / trespassing.
  • Alberta Crown Prosecution Service STAYED all charges (spokesperson Michelle Davio: the prosecution standard — reasonable likelihood of conviction in the public interest — "has not been met").
  • Police reported no serious injuries; demonstrators (People's University for Palestine) said four students injured, one hospitalized. Prof. David Kahane: "I personally saw bleeding wounds from baton strikes and bruises from non-lethal munitions."

Institutional response

  • Chief Dale McFee (EPS chief at the time) defended the clearing: safety concerns, "entrenchment," and intelligence; "I wish people would have just left peacefully when they were asked." Deputy Chief Devin Laforce framed pallets as "occupation supply."
  • Nour Salhi (student spokesperson): "Our encampment had no violent behaviour for them to police in the first place… We were praying together… I don't understand how that is a policeable action." / "the entire city of Edmonton should be appalled."
  • The Alberta government referred the U of A and U of C clearings to ASIRT. The Edmonton Police Commission (chair John McDougall at the time; commissioner Irfan Chaudhry filed the query) sought EPS info on protest management and name tags; McDougall stressed the commission is "precluded from becoming involved in operational policing matters."
  • McFee at the commission: EPS managed "more than 800" protest events in the past 16 months — the volume-of-protest framing police use to justify force posture.

Note for the project spine

This is the city's police force (EPS) — the same force whose budget was put on the C604B autopilot escalator (Knack's own 2023 motion) and the same apparatus that razed homeless encampments across 2024 — deployed against a Palestine-solidarity assembly. The clearing decision itself was the university president's, executed by EPS; no recorded city-council vote authorized it.
