Shelter capacity (Jan 2024)

  • 1,550 spaces as of Jan. 9, 2024 (Alberta provincial government statement).
  • 1,700 spaces was the target expected by Nov. 1, 2023 (provincial commitment).
  • 1,429 spaces counted independently (Postmedia).
  • Minister Jason Nixon claimed "over 1,400 shelter spaces" with "another couple hundred" opening early 2024.

  • Breakdown: 1,733 provisionally accommodated; 519 using shelters; 694 unsheltered; 105 status unknown.

The gap

  • ~1,550–1,700 shelter spaces vs 3,051 people homeless → shortfall of at least ~1,350–1,500. 694 documented unsheltered despite claimed capacity.
