Food Not Bombs Edmonton (FNB YEG) recovers food that would otherwise be wasted and serves free vegan meals to anyone hungry. It is an anti-capitalist, anti-poverty, anti-war collective — explicitly NOT a charity.

Their own words: "Food Not Bombs is not a charity. We do not believe that hunger is some eternal problem that can only be addressed by the altruism of the rich and powerful. Rather, hunger is caused by the rich and powerful." They tie military/state spending directly to hunger — resources for war are money "stolen directly from out of their mouths" of hungry children.

Programs: Helping the Humans (free vegan meal delivery to doorsteps, has served hundreds of households); Community Meals (monthly, Mary Burlie Park / Kinistinâw Park, ~40 people each); a Community Pantry in progress (reviving the earlier Community Fridge program); a community garden being restarted; seasonal fruit collection.

This is the "long live the left" exhibit in miniature: the group actually putting food in hands runs on mutual aid and recovered waste, receiving $0 in dedicated city funding, while the municipality funds no community-fridge/free-food program of its own. The politics is baked into the model — an analysis that names hunger as produced by the rich, versus council's language of charity and leverage.
