The Edmonton Renters' Union (ERU) is the city's tenant union. Self-description: it "engages in direct, collective action and mutual support, seeking material and procedural remedies for situations that harm renters' safety, security and dignity. Through pooling resources together, the union aims to effectively challenge landlords and their political supporters."

The register is explicitly one of power, not petition — collective action against landlords, not a motion at council. Contrast for the thesis: while council debated (and shelved) a mansion tax and passed EPCOR rate filings near-unanimously, average 2-bed rent ran $1,304 (2022) → ~$1,481 (2024), +14%. The tenant union is the extra-electoral instrument that acts on that directly (eviction defense, collective bargaining with landlords, mutual support) where the ballot delivered rate hikes.
